MERU NATIONAL PARK

The Meru National Park is an area of some 1813 Sq. km to the north - east of Mount Kenya, The Park ranges from 1036m in the foothills of the Nyambeni range, it's boundary, to less than 3040m on the Tana River in the south - eastern sector. The former home of George Adamson and Joy Adamson. They reared animals including the famous lioness Elsa and their cheetah Pippa. Located at the eastern slopes of its evergreen lands. It is made famous by Elsa the lioness whose association with this wild & lovely country is the well known through Joy Adamson's books. The Park offers a wide range of wildlife that includes: Elephant, Black Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, Grant's Gazelle, Beisa Oryx, Lion, Leopard & Cheetah.

Meru is part of a complex of protected areas along the Tana River that includes the adjacent Bisanadi and Mwingi National Reserves (to the east and south respectively). The North Western sector is hilly, with rich volcanic soils. The land flattens towards the East, where grey alluvial volcanic soils appear. The area is crossed by numerous permanent streams.
